As the temperature drops in the fall, pests look for a warm place to live. Many pests become less active in the winter, but the warmth from your home may make them think spring has arrived. However, rodents are not inactive during winter and the inside of your house or storage shed looks very inviting for their winter home. YourNaples exterminator offers these tips to help you keep pests out of your home:
Exterior
- Check all the window and door screens to make sure they are in good condition, free of tears ad holes
- Screen large openings in the exterior of the home including the chimney, air vents, clothes dryer vent, and attic fans
- Apply sealant to any cracks you find on both the interior and exterior, even tiny ones
- Seal around the soffits if necessary
- Caulk around doors, windows and between the siding and trim
- Repair any broken windows or glass
- Add a door sweep between the door and the door jamb
- Do not store firewood close to the house as pests like to nest in wood
- Clean the gutters to get rid of nesting areas and moisture
- Any storage areas need to be kept dry and tidy to discourage nesting
- Make sure the roof and shingles are in good repair
- Keep trash and recycle bins clean, make sure bags are sealed properly, and rinse out all recycling containers
- Eliminate any other sources of food and water outside, such as mulch near the home
- Trim back tree branches and bushes
Interior
Here are some tips if some pests do get inside:
- Wipe up crumbs and spills immediately from counter tops and food storage areas
- Clean under kitchen appliances regularly
- Store leftovers in sealed bags or containers
- Reduce clutter under sinks and in the attic
- Store pet food in a sturdy container with a lid
- Get rid of cobwebs wherever they are, especially the basement and attic
- Inspect the home regularly to spot any growing pest problems
